Three kittens discovered abandoned in a vodka box in a Scottish park have prompted an animal welfare investigation. The young cats, found by children playing in Gallatown Park, Fife, appear to have been well-cared for before being mysteriously left behind.

The unexpected drama began when a group of children playing in Gallatown Park stumbled upon the unusual sight – three kittens huddled together inside a discarded vodka box. The children, showing remarkable responsibility, quickly alerted an adult to their discovery. The concerned citizen then contacted the Scottish SPCA’s helpline on Thursday.
“Finding abandoned animals is unfortunately not uncommon for our inspectors, but the condition of these kittens makes this case particularly puzzling,” said Robyn Gray, an inspector with the Scottish SPCA who responded to the call.
Well-Cared For Despite Abandonment

Unlike many abandoned animals, these kittens showed signs of previous good care. The trio – one female and two males – appeared to be in excellent health, estimated at around 12 weeks old.
“The kittens were in good condition and did not have any injuries, illnesses or fleas,” Gray explained. “They have clearly been well cared for up to this point.”
This level of health is unusual in abandonment cases, where animals are often found suffering from various ailments, malnutrition, or parasite infestations. The good condition of these kittens suggests they came from a home where they received proper care before being abandoned.
Makeshift kittens Carrier Provides Clues
The makeshift carrier used to abandon the kittens may provide clues to their origin. Gray noted, “The kittens were found in a vodka box that appears to have been used for moving or storage in the past. The box is marked ‘Tops’ and dated from 2017.”
This detail suggests the box had been repurposed multiple times before being used to transport and abandon the kittens. While functional as a temporary carrier, cardboard boxes can quickly deteriorate in Scotland’s often damp weather, potentially putting the kittens at risk of exposure if they hadn’t been found promptly.
Distinctive Features May Help Identify Source

The Scottish SPCA is hoping the kittens’ distinctive appearance will help identify who abandoned them. All three are described as semi-longhaired with unique markings that should be recognizable to anyone familiar with the litter.
“They all have distinctive markings, so we’re sure someone must recognize them,” Gray emphasized. This physical evidence, combined with the kittens’ good health, suggests they weren’t feral or street-born but rather came from a home environment.
Proper kittens Surrender Options Available
The Scottish SPCA used this incident to remind the public about appropriate ways to surrender unwanted pets.
“Although we appreciate the owner may have meant for these cats to be found, this is not the proper way to give up an animal if you can no longer care for them,” Gray stated.
Most animal welfare organizations, including the Scottish SPCA, offer surrender services for people who can no longer care for their pets. These structured programs ensure animals are properly documented, receive appropriate medical care, and enter adoption systems designed to find suitable new homes.
