The Torrox Hub in Torrox Costa is becoming the center of feline welfare advocacy as it prepares to host a special awareness day dedicated to community cat care. Scheduled for Wednesday, June 21, this engaging event aims to educate the public about the plight of abandoned and stray cats in the area while raising both funds and food donations to support ongoing rescue efforts.

The initiative comes at a critical time when many cats in the region face abandonment, with the problem particularly acute during kitten season when many pregnant cats are left homeless and newborn kittens are sometimes discarded in shocking circumstances.

Ann Kelleher, affectionately known as the “cat lady of Torrox,” will be leading the educational portion of the event alongside fellow cat advocate Michelle. Together, they will provide valuable information on basic cat care while highlighting the serious challenges facing the local feline population.

Ann brings considerable experience to the table, as she personally feeds over 100 abandoned cats each day—a compassionate commitment that costs her approximately €450 monthly. Her firsthand knowledge of the situation makes her presentation particularly relevant for community members looking to understand or contribute to local cat welfare efforts.

Food Donations and Funding for Community Cats

The event organizers have structured the day to provide both education and practical support for Torrox’s cat population. Running from 10am until 4pm, Ann and Michelle will be available to answer questions from visitors and accept much-needed donations.

Attendees are encouraged to bring cat food or monetary contributions, which will directly support the feeding programs that sustain abandoned cats throughout the area. This hands-on approach allows community members to make an immediate difference while learning about longer-term solutions to the abandoned cat crisis.

While highlighting the significant challenges facing Torrox’s cat population, the event also acknowledges important collaborative efforts already underway. Ann has specifically recognized the contributions of Mayor Óscar Medina in implementing neutering programs and praised TAIL animal rescue organization for their assistance with cat welfare.

The awareness day represents an opportunity to build on existing initiatives and inspire broader community involvement in creating sustainable solutions for feline welfare in Torrox and beyond.

This community-driven event showcases how local advocates can make a significant difference in animal welfare through education, direct care, and collaborative problem-solving—offering an inspiring model for other communities facing similar challenges with abandoned and stray cat populations.
